California Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Rep. Jeff Denham, whose 10th District includes the Stanislaus River, have authored legislation that would focus federal attention to combating predation of juvenile salmon and steelhead trout in the river. On July 5, 2016, the House passed Denham’s “Save Our Salmon” bill, which would remove the fish doubling provision in a 1992 water deal for non-native, predatory striped bass, thereby protecting native salmon and steelhead and reducing nonessential water usage. The Senate still must act before Denham’s proposal becomes law.
